What is Stress?

Not all stress is bad. A certain amount of stress can help you to perform at your best. It's quite normal for instance to feel some stress when giving a public presentation or interviewing for a new job. In short low-intensity bursts the stress response can keep us alert and sharp. It only becomes a serious problem when we feel stressed for an extended period of time. This is exhausting and can leave you feeling that you're not coping very well.

Basic definitionStress is a negative physical/emotional/nervous system response to feeling in some way overwhelmed. It is usually caused when the perceived demands placed upon us appear to outweigh our ability to cope. 

With such a simple definition we might wonder what all the fuss is about? However stress is serious business. According to the UK Health and Safety Executive over ten million working days were lost to work-related stress in the UK alone in 2010/2011. Our World is accelerating and as the demands placed upon many of us continue to increase it's more important than ever to take steps to keep our rising stress levels in check. 

While we all accept that the body needs regular exercise to stay healthy, so too does the mind require nourishment and rest to remain at its best. For some people, this is news. We are not generally alerted to this fact until we begin to personally experience symptoms of stress and by that time it's often too late and we've already become unwell. Whilst prevention is always better than cure, don't fret! There are plenty of tools available to start making things better today, so please take a look around the site, and know that with a little application and understanding there's help available to reduce your stress and get your life back to normal. It may interest you to know that I suffered from severe anxiety and depression when I was in my twenties for the best part of a decade. I went on to become a professional therapist from 2003-2016, and naturally I specialised in helping people with stress and anxiety related disorders for over thirteen years. 

In 2016, I closed my practice to concentrate on writing and teaching. I have released two books this year.
